What kind of student would want to go to CSNHS? Is this program for gifted student?
The Program is open to all students who have demonstrated successful performance in their high school courses. It is for students who demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and the desire to achieve at a high level, but is certainly not limited to the “gifted” student.
Do you choose your own classes and make your own schedules? Does someone help you? We place you in the high school courses that you need to meet graduation requirements, and you schedule your college courses around your high school schedule. College and high school counselors are available to provide guidance for you in this area.
Are there honors classes available for high school and college? Yes. We offer Honors Social Studies, English, and Math on the high school level, and we grant dual honors credit for many of the classes taken at College of Southern Nevada. CSN also offers some sections of college honors courses. Can you take college classes in English, U.S. History, government and math that will fulfill your high school requirements? Core classes must be taken from our high school teachers. You may take college courses in these areas, and you will receive one-half elective credit for each of them.
Is it possible to graduate early in this program? As in any high school, it is possible to graduate early from CSNHS, but we highly recommend that you stay in our program throughout your junior and senior year since you will be earning college credit while you’re here.
Are there any extra-curricular activities at the high school program? Students may participate in National Honors Society, Student Leadership, Government We The People, and enjoy activities such as prom and occasional dances.
Are you able to participate in extra-curricular activities at your home school? How does that work? Yes, with permission from both sites. However, it is difficult to do with the CSNHS 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. academic schedule.
What rules and guidelines are different from regular high school programs? CSNHS is part of the Clark County School District, and therefore we must follow all the rules of regular high schools. We have a tighter attendance policy due to our unique schedule.
What about the attendance policy? Does it cover college classes too? Our high school attendance policy limits absences to no more than 8 per semester. This includes absences for any reason. Our attendance policy cannot cover the college classes. Therefore, our students must be responsible enough to understand the importance of regular class attendance in achieving academic success. Is the dress code the same as it is in regular high schools? Yes.
What happens if you haven’t passed your proficiency tests, can you still be accepted to the programs? We provide opportunities for our students to take the proficiency tests on our campus. Students who are non-proficient in mathematics will be placed in math applications to assist in preparing for the examination.
How many days a week must I come to my high school classes? A high school class meets 2 days per week for 85 minutes and on Fridays for 45 minutes. You will need to attend 3 to 5 days per week, depending on your high school schedule
Is there any transportation provided by the school district? Students and their families are responsible for providing their own transportation.
What kind of environment does the college have? Each campus is unique and provides a smaller school climate than you might have in your comprehensive high school. You will be attending classes with adults, as well as other high school students. How do you decide what college classes to take? You should choose your classes based on your areas of interest, as well as classes that will transfer to other post-secondary institutions.
How do you know which college teachers are good? Course instructors tend to change. We can make suggestions for courses, but not for instructors. We advise student to talk to former students as much as possible.
Do your college courses transfer to a regular four year college program? In general, the majority of the courses will transfer, but we suggest that you speak with college counselors, as well as the college you are planning to attend.
What happens if you have problems in your college classes? Is there tutoring available? All students are advised to speak with their instructors, and 12 hours of free tutoring are available through the college for each course in which you are enrolled.
When you graduate do you apply to colleges as a freshman or as a transfer student? Most colleges prefer to admit you as a freshman with transfer credits. However, students should always check with the specific colleges that they are interested in attending.
If I attend this program will it have a positive effect on my applications for college and scholarships? A student’s performance within our program and following through with completing applications will increase their chances of receiving scholarships.
What happens if I fail or withdraw from any of my college courses? CCSD pays for 12 college credits per semester. Any credits above 12 are paid for by the student. If a student fails or withdraws from a college course, he/she will be billed by the college for the course.
